Our basketball teams have had some thrilling victories and upsetting defeats. The regular season wraps up the second week of February. We are extremely proud of our girls and boys basketball teams, cheer squads, and coaches for all their efforts they put into this season.

WAYS TO ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT THEIR SCHOOL DAY
Daily communication with your child regarding school is critical. However, many middle school students do not talk openly with parents anymore. Below are some common questions to ask.
1. Who did you sit with during lunch today?
2. What’s the favorite part of your day?
3. Tell me one thing you learned today?
4. How did your project/test go today?
5. Can you tell me about a character from a book you are reading?
6. What is the hardest part of your day?

VINDICATOR SPELLING BEE
The winner of the Struthers Middle School Spelling Bee was Ella Mercer, grade 5. Ella will be representing Struthers Middle School at the WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee, which will take place on Saturday, March 11 at 9 AM at Youngstown’s Powers Auditorium. Good Luck Ella!
PRESIDENTS’ DAY
On Monday, February 20, school will be closed in observance of Presidents’ Day. Classes will resume Tuesday, February 21.
CONFERENCES
Conferences will be held on Thursday, February 16 from 1 to 9 PM. There will be an early release beginning at 12:33 PM. The forms to schedule a conference were already sent home. The following staff members who teach at two schools within the district will be at SMS from 1 to 4 PM: Mr. Hawkins, and Mr. Shuluga. Mrs. Saunders will be here from 5 to 9 PM. Mr. Donatelli and Mrs. Russo will be at the high school all day and evening. If you would like to speak with Mr. Donatelli and Mrs. Russo, they can be reached at 330-750-1062.
PROGRESS REPORTS
Thursday, February 16 is the halfway point of the third nine-week grading period. We encourage parents and students to access their grades on Progress book. If you need assistance, please call the main office.
OHSAA MEETING
There will be a meeting on Wednesday, March 1 for seventh and eighth grade student athletes and their parents who plan to play a spring sport. The meeting will begin at 6:00 PM in the middle school auditorium.
STRUTHERS FOOD PANTRY
The Struthers Middle School food pantry is open. Students can come down to the cafeteria every Friday for a bag of food, and personal hygiene products.
SPRING SPORTS ELIGIBILITY
Student-athletes participating in a spring sport must pass four classes during the third nine weeks in order to be eligible. Also, students who attain the age 15 before August 1 are ineligible for interscholastic athletics.
