Elective Classes for Students

Struthers High School offers a number of electives for students to take during their 4 years of high school. Below is a list of classes available to students in grades 9-12. Specific pre-requisite requirements are listed below, as well as eligible grade levels. Students are encouraged to reach out to the course teacher for more information.


Digital Media

Course Electives

This class is for students interested in learning more about broadcast journalism, video equipment and more. Students in the Digital Media class will learn how to operate video and recording equipment. The digital media class will work on a variety of projects during the year, including filming the Fourth of July Parade, assume the role of sideline reporters, spotters and production at home games, recording Elementary School events and more.

This class is offered during 5th and 6th period time slots.

Entrepreneurship

Course Electives

The goal of the Entrepreneurship Program is to provide students with the tools, strategies and confidence needed to launch and grow new businesses. The program was written by Craig Zamary, Marketing and Entrereneurship Professor at Kent State University and Struthers local, based on his book Who Owns the Ice House.

Family & Consumer Science Courses

Course ElectivesNUTRITION AND WELLNESS

A semester class designed to help students learn about the basic principles of nutrition. Throughout the course students will develop a personalized approach to healthy living.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

In this course students will study the principles of child growth, development and behavior.

LIFE PLANNING

In this course students will analyze interests and skills to prepare for careers and transitions throughout life. Students will also develop basic financial literacy skills to prepare them for the future.

Newspaper

Course Electives

Student Prints is a student-led newspaper that serves as the voice of Struthers High School. Students write articles in the areas of News, Opinion, Entertainment, Sports, and Feature. We highlight community news and events, along with spotlights on students and staff. Students in grades 9-12 can take the class. Students can also take it all four years.

Pre-requisites: Incoming freshmen who are interested in becoming staff members need to schedule Journalism. They also need to submit an opinion piece on a self-selected topic. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who are interested in taking Journalism I need to maintain a B average in their English classes. In order to take Journalism II, III, and IV need to maintain a B average in the previous Journalism course.

Awards: Each year, student work is submitted to Youngstown State University’s Press Day.

  • In 2014, The Student Prints Staff received Most Improved Newspaper.
  • In 2017, The Student Prints Staff received Best Newspaper in the area.
  • In 2019, The Student Prints yet again received Best Newspaper in the area. Robotics

Course ElectivesIn the Robotics class at Struthers High School, students have the opportunity to work hands on building VEX robots. They can also form teams to compete in the VEX Robotics League Matches, held at MCCTC.
