Struthers City Schools Welcomes More than 100 at Annual Senior Citizen Picnic

Senior citizen Picnic 2022

June 13, 2022

Struthers students, staff, and board members served more than 100 community members at the district’s annual Senior Citizen Picnic at Mauthe Park on Wednesday, June 8.

“We love this opportunity to stay connected with our senior citizens,” says Mary Carcelli, president of the Struthers Board of Education. “This group is an integral part of our community and are longtime supporters of our schools, and we appreciate the chance to speak with them and show our appreciation.”

The summer picnic is one of two dinners the district hosts for its senior citizens. This past fall, the district served a dinner celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas in the high school cafeteria. Door prizes were drawn, with dozens of seasonal decorations, gift certificates, and other tokens of appreciation being handed out to those in attendance.

At the picnic, special recognition was given to Kenneth Kopp (100 years old) and alumni from the Struthers Class of 1944 (the earliest Struthers alumni represented).

The district’s foodservice team prepared the picnic meal and the school’s custodial staff helped with the preparations for the event. Struthers administration, volunteers, and students from the boy’s basketball team, Interact Club, and NHS served the guests and handed out the prizes.

These events would not be possible without the generous contributions of businesses, organizations, and individuals in the community, notes Carcelli. Donations for the dinners were provided by:

  • Anthony Quahliero - Kirila Funeral Home
  • Arby’s
  • Betsy Kopp
  • Bob and Chris Granchie
  • Briar Hill Pizza
  • Chick-fil-A
  • Elmton
  • EndTime Grafix
  • Giannos Candy
  • Handel’s Ice Cream
